SDMG General Meeting: Julia Harrison, “Carving a Niche for Myself”

At Spanish Village Art Center in Balboa Park

Mon, Nov 23 · 7pm

Gems and minerals · Free · presented by San Diego Mineral & Gem Society

A free public meeting featuring artist Julia Harrison on using subtractive processes to create sculpture and jewelry. She will discuss taking up carving more than 30 years ago, share images of her work, and talk about tools and practices that let her work without a conventional studio or workshop. She will bring examples of recent work in wood, porcelain, sterling silver, and cottonwood bark.

  • Harrison is an artist, writer, and researcher focused on carving and carved objects. Her recent residencies and fellowships include Penland School of Craft, Contemporary Craft, the Center for Craft, and Winterthur Museum. She taught jewelry in Italy in spring 2025 and is currently resident artist for the Furniture Design and Woodworking program at SDSU.
  • Refreshments will be served. The Society provides beverages, and attendees are invited to bring something to share.
